confluss & Christopher Adler/Andrea Violet Lodge

PROGRAM
confluss : This project focuses on broadening the lens on what it means to write for unusual instrumentation. We have three new commissions by Grant Luhmann, Thomas Feng, and Haihui Zhang, as well as a new piece my myself, featuring a combination of multiple different instrumental combinations of voice, bass, trumpet, percussion and bassoon. Another aspect to this program is focused on "re-canonizing" the traditional canon of classical music, not only by means of instrumentation, but by commissioning composers of different backgrounds, with a focus on women, non-white composers, and composers from the LGBT community. - Christopher Adler/Andrea Violet Lodge : Pianists Christopher Adler and Andrea Violet Lodge join to present Christopher Adler’s City Lights and Other Stories, a collection of fourteen short works for solo piano. This collection traverses Christopher’s wide-ranging musical experiences with classical and modern keyboard repertoire, jazz, avant-garde and Southeast Asian musics. The works vary from intermediate to advanced and introduce a wide variety of contemporary techniques and musical principles in a manner suitable for students of piano seeking to gain fluency in the contemporary musical idiom. Interspersed are other portraits of city life, including James Erber’s contemplative setting of a walk along London’s Pool River, Emily Doolittle’s homage to the humble shrew, both for piano four-hands, and Andrew Noseworthy’s technological deconstruction of a pop anthem by Carly Rae Jepsen.

Reflected Arcs

PROGRAM
escapeVelocity presents a recital of 20th and 21st century masterworks for violin and piano. Anchoring the program are pioneering American modernist Ruth Crawford’s brutally beautiful Sonata for Violin and Piano and Charles Ives' Violin Sonata No. 4. These pieces are contrasted with—and illuminated by— Judith Weir’s elegant and humorous Music for 247 Strings, Oliver Knussen's mysterious and searching Autumnal, and Jessica Mays's lush and fiery Duo. Exploring symmetry, reflections, and the balance between opposing forces, Theo Chandler’s newly commissioned work Reflected Arcs holds the program in balance. Elizabeth Baker & Kathleen Supove's The Exploding Piano

PROGRAM
A program of works by living composers that explore the subtleties of solo piano. The program encourages the audience to listen beyond the fundamental tones that they initially hear and to get lost in a sea of overtones and harmonics as vibrating sonic bodies explore every part of the room. Tonal works intertwined with pantonal works further explore a variety of shades in the modern solo piano palette. The varied use of graphic notation, structured improvisation, and traditional notation opens the range of the performer’s dialogue with their instrument as they move in and out of the contemporary music vernacular. Also, featured is Command Voices a work for solo pianist, that employs vibrating objects on the strings to conceptually alter the conversational relationship between performer and instrument. A seemingly conventional solo piano concert turns on it’s head when paired with the electronic work Quadrivium B-Side (Excerpt), a programmatic journey of the flux between the modern post ontological world where a secondary self and dual reality exists by means of a persistent silent web presence, and the world of antiquity where we had only one being that was largely defined by our experiences in on the physical plane of reality. PROGRAM: Sashay by Nathan Corder Trois Cent Notes* by Karlheinz Essl waking sleeping bodies* by Nathan Corder with choreography by Elizabeth A. Baker Command Voices by Elizabeth A. "here (4): a poetics of art labor" - a multimedia opera

PROGRAM
The act of aesthetic exploration, sensual embodiment, and inter-subjective dialogue in musical performance are all good in their search for a truth-in-art, yet in our contemporary economy, working class artists increasingly find themselves without adequate economic remuneration for their work, mammoth amounts of debt, and difficulty finding community and cultural belonging. "here (4): a poetics of art labor" takes this condition as its starting point, makes transparent and reflects on the political forces which have influenced the four performer's production of this work, and organizes a thesis towards a different condition of producing art in a world that is yet to materialize. The four performer/composers Jack Langdon, Joshua Weinberg, Cosimo Pori, and Gabriel Coleman have assembled a work which combines group improvisation, theater and movement, sonic fragility, documentary, and lecture to dramatize a utopian movement away from the influence of capital in art. This work will last approximately 90 minutes without intermission. Program - "here (4): a poetics of art labor" - co-composed by Jack Langdon, Joshua Weinberg, Cosi Pori, and Gabriel Coleman (world premiere)

Beginning with artistic director Dan VanHassel’s Ghost in the Machine, the ensemble plays robotic rhythms in ghostly counterpoint with electronically-triggered percussion. Next, in Chaya Czernowin’s Sahaf we enter a completely different sonic universe, in which the entire ensemble takes a Kafkaesque journey through a sonic meat-grinder, symbolized by an array of ratchets. In Louis Andriessen’s Hout the group plays a never-ending melody of machine rhythms, slightly off-set from each other. This relentless rhythmic march gives way to an ambient re-imagining of Bjork’s song It’s Not Up To You in which the concerns of everyday life give way to explorations of unexpected beauty. Finally, we have Philippe Hurel’s tour-de-force Localized Corrosion, in which the tropes of psychedelic rock and spectralism melt and decay before our very eyes. We are three composers who often work with electronics and are deeply interested in interactivity and the physicality of performance. We are invested in the "liveness" of our electronics as something that augments, depends on, and plays on the musicality of human performers. We are three composers who often work with electronics and are deeply interested in interactivity and the physicality of performance. We are invested in the "liveness" of our electronics as something that augments, depends on, and plays on the musicality of human performers. This concert presents a range of our works for solo performers with live electronics. All the pieces are virtuosic in their own ways, whether that virtuosity stems from the volume of decisions performers are faced with (Tattoo of a Gesture), risky live technologies such as short loops (We are the same as we have always been), technically demanding passages on an instrument (Depth Sounding, HbeaRt), or learning to manipulate a medium outside one's usual practice (METRO). In almost all cases these pieces are also the results of intensive consultation and collaboration with the players who will be performing them. Depth Sounding (Flannery Cunningham; violin and electronics, performed by Kate Dreyfuss) FIXED HbeaRt (Niloufar Nourbakhsh; piano and electronics, performed by composer) We are the same as we have always been (Flannery Cunningham; bass clarinet and electronics, performed by Raissa Fahlman) (Brief pause) M و E ر T ت R م O (Niloufar Nourbakhsh; dancer and Arduino, performed by Marie Zvosec) Tattoo of a Gesture (Margaret Schedel; bendir and electronics, performed by Christopher Howard) - SORE YURE It is in Strasbourg that the path of these two international, multi-talented musicians crosses. Sore Yure is born from the willing to grow and advance together towards musicality, poetry, textures, colors, gestures, images, voices, soundscapes, musical universes; aiming for a musical and human exchange that gives to the music they play new prisms to listen and imaging, renewing the pleasure (often forgotten) of making, sharing and listening music. A “two headed” ensemble where the two musicians together research and reach for the composers and scores which could be played, adapted, adopted or commissioned, having always in mind their musical path towards gestuality, sound textures, multi-phonics, micro-tonality or infra-sounds, but never neglecting, harmony, melody or rhythm, and reinventing thru all of them a new idea of virtuosity. SoreYure is more than a Duo, it is a polymorphic project capable of bringing to your ears and eyes music from any part of the world and any era... a shakuhachi duo, a Bach invention, a piece for gestures and electroacustics, as well as music created and composed today, tailored just for them. 7:30 PM Adam Tahir Mirza | Sense-Sound: Recent Electronic Compositions The purpose of this residency project is to revise my recent fixed audio compositions and develop a new live electronic composition featuring spoken word in collaboration with Akiva Zamcheck. These compositions will be presented in concert at the conclusion of the residency. Inside Out is a quad audio composition that explores various registers of microphonic listening in surround sound. Space Phrase, originally written to accompany a feminist dance piece (Rule of Thumb by Lori Teague and Christine Suarez), presents a sound collage of broken objects, places and people. White is an audio poem of a text by scholar-artist Rimona Afana. PROGRAM Inside Out White Space Phrase New Work *live electronics and spoken word (in collaboration with Akiva Zamcheck) - 8:30 PM Christopher Jette Christopher Jette (composer) and Mark Broschinsky (trombone) began collaborating during there time as students and have continued over the years creating a series of new works. Each of the works presented marks a different stage in that collaborative process. Taken together, the set of compositions is an exploration of the multiple ways in which trombone sound can motivate a piece. The core principle in each work is the use of sound and the translation of that material into a work investigating the unique aspects of the original source material.

game over - a musical computer game performance and installation In this performance, a clarinet player uses a motion sensor to navigate an avatar through various bizarre 2D game worlds. The performer is invited to explore the environment, interact with strange computer-controlled creatures and exploit the game mechanics to provoke unconventional musical structures. The audience is taken on a journey over a wide range of emotional and musical states, from subtle sound experiments to psychotic episodes. There is no winning or losing. The performance is a reflection on the role of the individual within a system of constraints and searches for the expressive potential of rebellion against predefined rules. Additionally, there will be a small installation setting where the audience is invited to explore the game environment themselves.

The Higgs whatever

PROGRAM
This sound and music installation explores presence and absence by revealing the acoustic disturbances caused in an interior space when bodies occupy it. Through sound alone, the presence of others can be sensed by the subtle changes their bodies make to the environment. Those sonic disturbances are used to make an oblique statement of presence and absence, making the absent bodies themselves audible as acoustic reflections and shadows. The work is primarily an installation intended for MISE-EN_PLACE Bushwick, and features site-specific performances by New York-based ensemble mise-en. However, its construction allows it to be transported to other locations, making MISE-EN_PLACE Bushwick present in other places.
